Service Civil international (SCI)is an organization working for Peace and justice through voluntary work . It was founded in 1920as a response to the violence, tragedy and destruction of the First World War. The first SCI project was an international work camp near Verdun, France, which lasted several months. Volunteers repaired a village heavily damaged by war. Participants came from different countries, which only a few years earlier had been each other’s enemies. Their action was a protest against nationalism and militarism, and a demonstration of the possibility of peaceful co-operation. At the same time, the camp was seen as a learning experience for all involved. Today, allthough a lot has changed, these still are the basic elements of our work. Every year, more than 5000 volunteers participate in SCI work camps all over the world. Most of these camps are in summer and last two or three weeks, but we also have longer term volunteer projects and projects outside the summer season. The work is usually very practical. Special skills are rarely required. SCI also organizes seminars, training activities, campaigns and other peace activities. It has partners in many countries. SCI has consultative status with the Council of Europe, operational relations with UNESCO and is a member of the Coordinating Committee of International Voluntary Service and of the European Youth Forum. It is an International Voluntary Organization. Works for the promotion of Peace & International Understanding without regard to:
