  • Mr. Niroshan Hemantha, an SCI-SL long term volunteer has been selected to follow a 9 month agriculture program at the Asian Regional Institute in Japan. He has been following the so called program from the beginning of April.
  • Dinuka Kulakulasuriya, also an SCI-SL long term volunteer has gone to Japan for one month to participate at a Martial Arts training program.

  • SCI-SL is expecting two more foreign volunteers in June and July respectively.
  • SCI is in the process of organizing a summer work-camp in Pigeon Islands, Nilaveli, Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. Work includes removal of invasive plants and cleaning the beach environment. The Wild Life Department has granted permission to conduct this work-camp. We hope that this will be a unique and exciting experience for the volunteers
  • Blue Rose School is expecting volunteers to help the kids with swimming, and speech therapy sessions. 
  • Blue Rose School is expecting donations to cover the school van cost from the month of August (7,500 LKR per month)

She made a generous donation of Rs. 30,000/- (200 Euro) on April 02, 2012, towards our transport fund which was in bad shape. This can be used to cover the costs for the school van for the next 4 months (Rs. 7500/month). We thank her for this great gesture.

Finding jobs for special need students is said to be a very difficult task, and no company or individual is ready to hire such a person to work for them. SCI-SL has proved everyone wrong by hiring a former student of Blue Rose School as a full time member of SCI-SL. Iresh Haliyagoda, former student of the Blue Rose School has now been assigned as a full time member of SCI-SL. He is primarily responsible for maintaining the library, assisting the mushroom project, and keeping the premises clean. He will also be provided with certain responsibilities regarding incoming visitors. We are proud to say that he has already made some significant progress.

They presented a dance which was appreciated and applauded by the audience.

Five volunteers from Denmark have arrived at the SCI-SL, and they have been placed at our peace center in Muthur.

  • Ger and Marie, two Irish volunteers who visited the Blue Rose School have successfully raised 2,500 Irish Pounds. Some of the money will be spent on purchasing a new Envelope Machine in the aim of providing vocational training for the older students. 
  • Two volunteers have been spending their valuable time at SCI-SL and the Blue Rose School. They recently joined SCI-SL as Long Term Volunteers (LTVs). They are Livia Barma from Switzerland and Gia Eaman from Serbia. One volunteer from Denmark is expected to join us during the first week of April, 2012.
  • John Pexton , who is originally from the United Kingdom and is currently living in Singapore, arrived at the SCI-SL on January 23, 2012 to visit the Blue Rose School. John was in Sri Lanka in 1994 and was happy to come and see the progress the school has made over the years. On his return, he made a donation of 10,000 USD for a sustainable project. It is proposed to construct a vocational training unit within the Blue Rose School with the usage of the donation. 
  •  SCI-SL is on the process of identifying suitable places for future (summer/winter) work-camps.

After year 2009, a lot of people have started volunteering in Sri Lanka. As a result of this 11 young Danish volunteers came to SCI Sri Lanka to give their cooperation to several projects run through SCI. As we got a quite big group we had to organize a 5 day orientation for them. This orientation included a session to aware them about the diseases prevailing in Sri Lanka, how to prevent them, precautions they  can take.etc. Also, we talked about the cultural aspects and how it affects to a person who comes from an another country. With parallel to this orientation we took them for a kandy city travel and one day trip to Ambuluwawa.
Meanwhile, we had a one day work-camp at the Blue Rose special school with the collaboration of Rotary club. The main tasks were to paint the main hall in Blue Rose school, to cut a big  dead tree in the play ground, cleaning the play ground and separating polythene in garbage thrown from mushroom project, repairing the small play ground inside the school. Nearly 30 people cooperated to this event including SCI members, foreign volunteers, members of the Rotary club, teachers and the parents of Blue Rose school.

  • At present, 15 long term volunteers (LTVs) have visited the Service civil international- Sri Lanka. They are from Belgium, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Switzerland, and Serbia. Most of them will be here for nearly 3 months. Another 10 more volunteers are expected to join the team within the coast of next two months. 
  • The Rotary Club from Matale participated together with the parent of students of the Blue Rose School, teachers, and members of the SCI to do the leftover paintings of a previous work-camp at the Blue Rose School on Feb 5, 2012. Nearly 13 volunteers just arrived the day before and got an introduction to the SCI work-camp methodology. The camp was a great success.
